The words spoken and the books read helped to calm individuals and take their minds off the gruesome events that were happening in Nazi Germany. During the bombing raids Liesel read in the Fielder’s basement to try to calm down her neighbours and herself. Liesel uses the words to create comfort and normality in the bomb shelter. “…a quietness started bleeding through the crowded basement. By page three, everyone was silent but Liesel” (Zusak 381). This quote explains how they were taken with Liesel’s powerful words and their minds were focusing on something other than the war. The moving words Liesel spoke in the shelter lead to Frau Holtzapfel asking Liesel if she could hear the rest of the story. Frau promised Rosa two things if she gave Liesel permission to read to her. ” I’ll stop spitting on your door, and I’ll give you my coffee ration” (Zusak 387).
