Some rulers during the 16th and 18th century had different ways of regarding religious toleration in their region. Some rulers tolerate different religions and allowed their people to practice any religion. However, some rulers didn’t support religious toleration and would execute those who didn’t conform to the ruler’s religion.
Religious toleration was accepted by many people in Europe during this time. For example, Sebastian Castellio, a French Protestant theologian, wanted all Christians to live together in unity with one another. He was afraid of the different religions in each state and how it could potentially break apart the different sects. In addition to that, he was also questioning who would want to become Christians when they saw other Christians being destroyed for confessing the name of Christ. Others found that religious toleration was the only way to keep their country safe from foreign invaders.
