INTRODUCTION
In this modern world, our society has become a global village. Everyone becomes so interconnected with one another via a vast network generated by the internet. As said by Marshall McLuhan, a philosopher of communication theory, “The new electronic independence re-creates the world in the image of a global village.” This electronic independence is inherently dependent upon the Internet. It illuminates the lives of thousands of people by spreading knowledge internationally, thereby making us global citizens.
A distinction between new media and old media is that old media is for the most part mass media. In addition, each form of new media is highly interactive, while mass media is not. Users of new media are active producers of content and information, whether sending an email or using Internet collaboration tools (Neese, 2016). Some examples of new media are social media, streaming audio or video, blogs, online communities, and so on.
There are numerous ways in which new media can impact students, could be positive or negative. That is why it is very important to properly examine new media impacts on students’ whether it is emotional, psychological, and even sociological.
A better understanding of the implications of new media towards students is necessary because this media platform has become a habitual part of our life. Students also use new media so often, and they are the ones that would set the pace for the future. So, how new media implicates them is such a debatable and important topic.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The implications of new media towards society, especially students are getting stronger and stronger each day because they use new media constantly. Internet makes everyone a publisher and everyone a librarian, in that anyone can both produce and retrieve an unprecedented amount of information (Nicoleta, 2008). This overflowing information may impact the freedom of speech and the agenda setting of traditional media, which would later transform our generation.
According to research conducted by Kaul (2012), the exponential rate of technological change that has transformed media and communication structures globally is reflected in the degree of attention paid to the convergent media nexus by the international community. With the rapid growth of new media technology including the Internet, interactive television networks, and multimedia information services, many proponents emphasize their potential to increase interactive mass media, entertainment, commerce, and education. This new form of media communication allows much more freedom of expression and interactivity that is ideal to the needs of students.
The rapid development of new media has been the main force that accelerates the trend of globalization in human society during the last few decades. With its distinctive nature, new media has brought human interaction and society to a highly interconnected and complex level (Chen, 2012). Society nowadays can share all aspects of their daily life to everyone, at anywhere and anytime.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
The new media is made up of too many applications and sites. Students these days could use new media for various purposes; there is no limitation like in the olden days. The Internet does provide ample opportunity to gain knowledge about faraway places, and offers a means of interacting across geographical expanses (Nicoleta, 2008). There is no such thing as boundaries anymore, so it is quite worrisome that these young minds might be exposed to too much negative influences or bad ideologies.
New media like the Internet, video games, and mobile telephones are criticized for their effects on social relations, values, institutions, and everyday life. A thorough appraisal of new media culture is made difficult by the uniqueness of many of its implications, and existing normative vocabularies, including those of ethics, political theory, aesthetics and epistemology, seem to fall short (Centre for Ethics and Technology). So, all of these implications need further observation and investigation, so we could say for sure how the young minds are being affected.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
First of all, the purpose of this study is to identify the functions of new media for UiTM students. It is to investigate how these students use new media, for what purposes they use these communication tools.
Secondly, it is to determine clearly, what are the positive and negative impacts of utilization of new media among UiTM students. Everything always comes with pros and cons. New media obviously brings a greater transformation in communication effectiveness and dispersing information. However, what are the downfalls of this new media?
Third, this research is conducted to study how media usage affects the awareness level among UiTM students. When every information is being dispersed vastly, it is only a matter of how the users manipulate these tools. So, it is necessary to evaluate this situation.

VARIABLE CONCEPTUAL AND OPERATIONAL DEFINITION
Conceptual Definition
Cambridge Dictionary defines new media as products and services that provide information or entertainment using computers or the internet, and not by traditional methods such as television and newspapers. We consider these here as some of the main terms in discourses about new media. These are: digital, interactive, hyper-textual, virtual, networked, and simulated (Grant ; Kelly, 2003). PC Magazine implies that the concept of new media involves people with similar interests congregate online and share, sell and swap information and goods. New media is a platform for everyone to have a voice in their community and in the world.

Operational Definition
Lehnhart and Madden (2007) state that fifty-five per cent of teenagers use and create online social networking profiles. They opine that with more than half of teenage Internet users interacting online, the concept of blogging is a salient research topic investigating what adolescents are blogging about, how they are socially interacting, and what potential effects this phenomena may have on other dimensions of their lives. New media also known as digital media allow publics to customize their search for information and delivery methods. Digital media can simultaneously provide audio, visual, and text publication methods as Internet users prefer (Valentini, 2012).

SCOPE OF STUDY
This study will be carried out among UiTM students, both males and females so that a detail analysis can be done. Towards completing this study, a survey will be conducted and handed out to these students to obtain data on the implications of new media. The characteristics and criteria for the respondents are general, so it will be easy to obtain the respondents. The respondents have to answer a set of questionnaire that is created according to the requirements of the study.

SIGNIFICANT OF STUDY
This research would provide clear understanding for the implications of new media towards students. This information would later be very useful in adjusting and innovation of our communication tools. The implication of new media towards the young minds, which is the students, is a very important matter because it will shape the society in the future. It is unacceptable if new media corrupts the young generation and rupture the society. Therefore, understanding the awareness, functions, and effects of new media is the key towards determining how this new media layout would implicate its users.
