Diet Related Disorders

1) Clearly state the diet related disorder-
Diabetes mellitus type 2 is a chronic condition (long lasting condition), this disorder is commonly known as type 2 diabetes. It is found in people who cannot store glucose properly inside their body and have trouble with their pancreas can’t produce enough insulin. This disorder is most common in overweight adults and can be prevented by daily exercise and good food choices. Diabetes is the 6th highest cause of death by disease in Australia.

2) Define the disorder including: causes, types etc.-

There are three main types of diabetes, they are; type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is a disorder which someone is born with or is diagnosed with at a young age, type 2 occurs when the body cannot store enough glucose and a person is usually diagnosed with this type when they are aged 45 to 64. Gestational diabetes affects a woman who is pregnant, it can affect the baby’s health and this type usually goes away soon after the delivery of their baby, although a small minority of about 9 percent of pregnant women get this type doctors still don’t know what causes Gestational diabetes

Some causes that are associated with type 2 diabetes are; genetics, high sugar levels, low blood glucose and obesity. The most common cause of this disorder is ‘insulin resistance’, this means that the body cannot store insulin properly. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (a disorder found in women) is also known to cause this type of diabetes.

3) Describe the type of diet that leads to this disorder, focusing on specific nutrients and types of food e.g. over nutrition, nutrition deficiency etc.

Doctors believe that vitamin A deficiency may be a factor involved in type 2 diabetes. This means that the body does not get enough of certain foods, some of these are; carrots, green vegetables, butter and eggs. Vitamin D deficiency is also increase the risk of this disorder, this vitamin is essential to the body and it is estimated that 1 billion people worldwide lack vitamin D.

Examples of over nutrition that effects type 2 diabetes are; high loaded sugar foods and processed products and the key contributing nutrients is excess fat consumption. This means that too much saturated fats are consumed leading to obesity which highly increases the risk of diabetes.

4) State the prevalence of the disorder-

280 people in Australia are developed with diabetes every day and around 500,000 Australians are recorded as having type 2 diabetes. This type of diabetes is one of the most common disorders in the world, America have around 26 million people with diabetes and about 95% of these people have type 2 diabetes. It is also estimated that half a million Australians have type 2 diabetes but don’t even know about it because they haven’t been checked foe it.

however, if someone is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes it can be reversed with healthy eating habits

5) Outline ways in which the disorder can be managed e.g. is the condition permanent or can it be managed and overcome

Type 2 diabetes cannot be cured but it can be controlled and treated. It can be managed by; a healthy diet, regular exercise, decreasing sugar levels, injectable drugs and insulin (taken with an insulin pen or with an inhaler) or sometimes people use an insulin pump which is inserted inside the body by an operation and the constantly pumps insulin through the body. Diabetics can be put into remission, meaning that there is no sign of any of the symptoms associated with type 2 diabetes.

6) Discuss other health related problems that may occur as a result of this disorder-

• Heart disease- a life threatening disease which effects the heart
• Cardiovascular problems – this includes cardiovascular disease or
• Strokes – which are caused by clots in the brains blood vessels and can cause brain damage
• Heart attacks – caused by blocked blood vessels

These are some of the problems that occur as a result of this disorder. These problems can potentially end the life of a person and is proof that type 2 diabetes should be avoided.

7) Plan a one day eating plan for someone who has this disorder (the day must include breakfast, lunch, dinner, desert and any other snacks that they may consume. Be sure to include portion/sizes). Highlight and justify the reason why you included certain nutrients/food e.g. glass of milk to increase calcium intake.
